The Personal and the Political
Cathy McQuaid
Bereavement is a normal reaction to loss. Some people take longer than others to mourn. Each will grieve in a unique way and may need different responses or support.
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5th edition (DSM) 5 and the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems 11th edition (ICD11) both have diagnoses for either Persistent Complex Bereavement-Related Disorder (DSM5) or Prolonged Grief Disorder (ICD11). Who determines what is 'normal' and what is a 'disorder' and why? During this workshop we will explore the reasons for having these diagnoses and the political pressures behind them.
